Sister Deirdre Mullan, A Sister of Mercy from Ireland is the coordinator of the Mercy Girl Effect – A Global Mercy movement which reaches out to girls in need. In 2005, Sister Deirdre, who has spent over 15 years at the United Nations as the Mercy International rep, formed the movement in collaboration with two teachers from Merion Mercy Academy in Philadelphia. This “mercying” movement connects students at all-girls Mercy-affiliated high schools in the USA and Ireland. The coalition brings together schools to share ideas and educate the young women in our midst about the plight of girls worldwide. Since 2005, the students have built schools in Cambodia and Sudan, put in wells in Nigeria, refurbished a hospital in Haiti, and provided hundreds of scholarships for girls in the developing world. Part of the Adult Faith Formation Monday series.
